If you received gift cards over the holidays, put them all in a central location so they don't get lost. After you use them, cut them in half and throw them away.

Look at all of your credit cards to remind yourself of the exploration date on each of your cards.

W-2 wage statements are required to be delivered to you by January 31st. If you have moved, contact your old employers, and give them your new address. If you don't receive your W-2 forms, you can contact the IRS for assistance.

If you receive forms from a bank or financial institution showing your interest or earnings for the year, the forms will generally be labeled as 1099. These should be put aside in a safe place to be used when you are preparing your 2009 income tax return.

January is a good time to check your life insurance policy payments and premiums to make sure they are up to date.

If you have to reach a deductable amount on your dental or medical insurance at the beginning of each year, contact your insurance company to verify your deductable amounts. Don't forget to ask the representative about your co-payment coverage while you are at it.

This is a good time of the year to think about making out a will, or revising your old one. If you are young, and don't think you need a will, at least write out your wishes for life saving measures incase you become seriously injured or catastrophically ill.

If you are thinking of buying a new car, or replacing old furniture, January is a good month to buy. Car dealers are trying to move out the 2009 models, and furniture stores are getting ready for their new furniture lines.

Many department stores do their inventory at the beginning of the year, watch for inventory blow out sales where ever you shop.
